The air you breathe in the aircraft cabin is supplied from the engines and can, at times, be contaminated with tricresylphosphate (TCP), a jet engine oil additive, as well as other contaminants. Exposure to TCP can cause brain cell death, headaches, nausea, memory loss, tremors, as well as other symptoms (for more information, please refer to the Research, then Results sections of http://www.ohrca.org).
To prove that TCP is an underlying cause of these symptoms, a blood test has been developed University of Washington professor Clem Furlong. This test will help physicians treat those exposed and assist Flight Attendants in their workers compensation cases. The research is being funded by crewmember unions, including AFA-CWA. King 5 News in Seattle recently ran an exclusive story on Prof. Furlong's research.
